Summer has ended, and with it, autumn trends begin circling round the blogosphere. Simple scrunchies are a staple for any long haired person, but this year we’re seeing them being worn and sold as a fashion statement.

A Wardrobe Staple

I can’t wait to see how this translates into en vogue hairstyles – Maybe we will soon see more ponytails in high fashion. Nonetheless, what could be more fun than creating a bunch of simple scrunchies for your  friends, family, and shops? These are inexpensive, quick and fun projects that anyone can enjoy! Buy specialty yarns for a customized look, or you could use spare yarn you have laying around.

If you enjoy Magic Circle technique crochet, or if you are new to crochet itself, you’re going to enjoy this simple but fun pattern. I myself am a huge fan of the Magic Circle method, as you can see in some of my more recent posts, including my Clucky the Kitchen Chicken Pattern and my Tiny the Turtle Amigurami Pattern! Some people are intimidated by this method but I assure you, it’s super simple. I made a quick video tutorial, available below, if you need any additional help with it

  • 9mm crochet hook (US size N)
  • a size 5 or 6 Bulky or Extra Bulky yarn. Choose a soft brand that you love! I used Premier Yarns Serenity Deborah Norville collection for this tutorial, and I highly recommend it. It’s available on Amazon HERE
  • Ponytail holders (elastic)
  • Yarn needles and scissors for weaving in ends.

Simple Scrunchies – Simple Method

Begin by doubling your yarn, and making a loop. Tie the double yarn around the pony tail holder. Try to make the loop just large enough for your hook to fit through.

Insert your crochet hook into the loop on top of the hair tie.

Row 1 – Ch 1. Yarn over once, to make a Dc – insert hook into ponytail holder, and draw yarn through.

Row 2 – Make 38 Dc inside loop

Sl st together with first stitch in round to join. Cut working yarn, tie off, and weave in any loose ends.

And that’s it! I hope you’ve enjoyed this free pattern. Leave me a comment down below and tell me what colors you have planned for your scrunchies! If you need any help, don’t hesitate to reach out. Until next time 💚
